We’ve all met people whom we thought were “so lucky”.  We humans tend to think luck is behind our lives’ misfortunes and successes; however, deep inside, we know that luck has nothing to do with what happens in our existence, don’t we?  What we so despairingly call luck is just the set of actions and beliefs of the “lucky” people, and how they apply them to business and their lives.

Individuals who are “lucky” in business and life, happen to share eight distinctive characteristics:

1.    They talk to everyone
Strangers are intimidating to most of us, however, many great experiences can result from talking to people we don’t know.  You never know… you might get ‘lucky’!

2.    They love small talk
Many people disregard small talk because they see it as unproductive. What they forget is that small talk can lead to the big talk when they least expect it.

3.    They ‘drop’ names
Although some may think that individuals that drop names are showoffs, one may find common ground and open doors when discovering you both know the same people.  There is indeed a way of dropping names with class.

4.    They listen and snoop
Lucky people are excellent listeners, observers, and eavesdroppers.  Being attentive can get you lots of information and is an inexpensive way of researching the market.

5.    They offer and ask for help
No one can do it alone; everyone needs help once in a while.  Lucky individuals let others know what they need and also offer to help out of good will.

6.    They wander off their path
The saying goes: “Not all who wander are lost”… how true!  When the opportunity arises, lucky people seize it, no matter where it leads; lawyers have become entrepreneurs, doctors have become writers, accountants have become singers, and teachers have become volunteers.

7.    They leave with grace
These individuals know when to leave, while they are still at their best and without creating enemies.  They know how the win/win scenario works, and recognize what’s best for all.

8.    They say yes, even if they want to say no
You never know where opportunities lie.  By saying no to something that may get in the way of your busy schedule, you may be also saying no to the chance of a lifetime.

That’s the luck in it all.  Lucky people are only lucky because they know what they want and they go for it with all their heart. They don’t let others or their circumstances get in the way. They believe in themselves and know someone out there will too, so they set out to meet people and to find that lucky person that is waiting to change their lives.

As a Singapore social media marketing consultant, I have seen local business trying to get into social media to try to sell and promote their services and products. There are of course successful example that local business are able to sell and promote their products in the social media arena.

But most of the business owners are doing all wrong. In social, we have to interact, engage and build up reputation among the target group of audience or customer. So, today, I am going to share with you insights of how local business can market correctly on the social media arena. I will discuss 4 top dog social media websites and they are facebook, youtube, twitter and linkedin.

Social Media Marketing – Facebook

By now, I assume you already have a facebook account. If not, just go and register for a free account over at Facebook. Basically what we will be doing in facebook is to create a facebook fan page and a group. The purpose for a fan page is to be able to publicly advertise your product, service or business. This is an all-important page as this will be your very own facebook fan page and it will be indexed and found on the search engine. So you might want to spend more time here. While your facebook group, think of a catchy headline to pull in members and give content, advice and help to your members. Remember the most powerful point in facebook group will be able to collect survey data result.

Social Media Marketing – youtube

Youtube is very interesting for local business owner. You can do basically anything with youtube for your business. For example, you can do a product trailer or teaser, you can also do video such as, testimonial video, product review video, info-tainment video, content video, how-to video and frequently asked question or FAQ video. You have to remember insert your website url at the end of your video and put up a brief description with your website url in the right hand side of your video.

Social Media Marketing – Twitter

Twitter is a small application that makes wonders for your local business. Think twitter as a sms broadcast that you can send out maximum 140 characters. You can send out important updates to your followers like, contest, promotion or if you are having a trade show, you can blast out your trade show details and many more to engage your followers.

Social Media Marketing – Linkedin

Linkedin is a professional and business online networking platform. As a business owner, you can put up your business profile and start engaging with other professional and business owners. This is a huge opportunity as not only will you be able to share content with your potential customer, you can build up your reputation and credibility in your industry too.

As you can see from the above, you can now think of your social media marketing strategy by using any one of the four above to start engaging your customer, audience or prospect.

There are a lot of people out there who are considering starting a business – whether from home, or a conventional business – and trying to decide how to best market it. There are also many people who currently own a business – whether successful, or simply breaking even. Some of this business owners do mostly offline marketing (word of mouth, newspaper ads, flyers) and are considering adding online marketing to their campaign, and some have never considered online marketing, nor do they know much about it.

Which ever group you may fall into, it doesn’t really matter. At this point in time, I’m not going to say marketing online is a must, but if you’re not doing, it you’re giving up a lot of business – especially if you sell a product or service that can be used anywhere in the world.

If you’re selling vitamins, jewelry, health and nutrition products, online education, book, e-books, etc. – why would you not want people in Europe and elsewhere to buy from you? Why would you want to restrict yourself to your town or state? It doesn’t make much sense.

By putting your business online, the whole world becomes your market place. It’s quite a cool feeling to see money deposited into your account from a customer in Indonesia. Furthermore, if you’re marketing a product or service that you truly believe in, that you truly feel can improve people’s standard of living and society – then isn’t it your duty to get in front of as many people as possible?

Hopefully, you’re in business doing something you’re passionate about. If you’re just out to make a buck, well that won’t last long. There really does have to be a greater purpose behind what you’re doing. The internet allows us to connect with people anywhere in the world. Using Voice Over IP (Internet Based Phone Service) allows us to speak to anyone in the world for pennies on the dollar. We truly live in an historic period of time.

If you’re marketing communications services (VoIP, cell phones, internet service, etc.) you may not be able to market to the world, but at the least you can market to the entire nation if not also Canada. Either way, there is no reason to limit yourself to your immediate location.

At this point, I hope I’ve made you aware of the most obvious benefits of marketing online. There are many ways to do this – be it Pay Per Click, Ezines (online articles), backlinks, or solo ads – so educate yourself on the benefits, costs, and experience necessary to apply each of those successfully before you jump into it. If you do so, I promise you’ll be ecstatic with what it will do for your business to get online.

If you need more information or advice on any of the above, don’t hesitate to contact me. I’ll either help you out, or direct you to someone who can.

To Your Success
